DECEMBER 2008 : Kaysersberg Recycling Initiative offers multiple benefits

Kaysersberg Plastics has launched a major recycling initiative, inviting customers to return used Correx twinwall plastic materials, which can then be reprocessed into a range of new product applications for the packaging and construction markets.

Correx is a light, rigid and cost-effective material, particularly suitable for printing and display applications, including outdoor signs. Kaysersberg has now installed new machinery at its factory in Gloucester that is capable of reprocessing up to 50 tonnes of polypropylene per week. The company is therefore offering to take back both Correx and any other brand of twinwall polypropylene and also ‘solid’ extruded polypropylene sheet.

All returned materials need to be reasonably clean and dry and in a minimum quantity of four pallets. Kaysersberg will collect the material free of charge, utilising empty delivery lorry space on return journeys to the factory.

Among the applications for the reprocessed material is as plywood replacement for protective shuttering for reinforced concrete foundation beams. Polypropylene is increasingly being selected over plywood for this application because it is easier, lighter and safer to use than plywood and also provides a permanent waterproof protection. In addition, since the majority of plywood is now manufactured and shipped from the Far East, the choice of European-sourced polypropylene provides an important environmental benefit through reduced carbon footprint as well as valuable transportation cost savings.

"Our Correx recycling initiative is good for the environment on many different levels," comments Mark Lightowler, Kaysersberg Plastics' Managing Director.

"Correx already offers advantages through its flexibility and lightness, and the ability now to recycle it is a major added bonus. Equally important, the reprocessed material can continue to deliver an environmental benefit in its new life."
